Britain’s best fish and chips shops revealed!


Britain’s best chippies revealed! Top 20 fish and chip shops of 2018 are shortlisted for award – does YOUR favourite make the list?

  • The fish and chip shops will be fighting for the title in 14 different categories from service to sustainability
  • The competition by Seafish recognises true excellence in the fish and chip industries across the country
  • Final businesses will compete in two further rounds of secret judging before the winner is named in January 

Fish and chip shops are hoping to batter-off their competition in a prestigious competition.

The National Fish & Chip Awards, organised by Seafish, has revealed its top 20 shortlist who will be fighting it in 14 categories.  

As part of the judging process, each shop is carefully assessed on a variety of elements including: sustainable sourcing policies, menu development and innovation, staff training policies and processes and wider marketing and promotional activity and techniques.

The quality of fish and chips on offer and the levels of customer service provided by staff will also be assesed. 

The competition recognises true excellence in the fish and chip industry and shortlisted businesses will compete in two further rounds of judging in their quest to become the nation’s number one chippy.  

Marcus Coleman, Chief Executive Officer at Seafish, said: ‘This flagship award category showcases the leading fish and chip businesses across the country.

‘There’s a tremendous amount of talent to be seen across the Top 20, and we wish them all the best in the next round of judging as we know how much this competition means to all of them.’

The winner of the Fish and Chip Shop of the Year Award will be announced at The National Fish & Chip Awards’ 31st anniversary ceremony in London on 24 January 2019. 

Over the coming weeks the shops will undergo a further phase of mystery diner judging inspections in order to whittle the Top 20 down to a Top 10 shortlist, before the final stage of judging held in London in January 2019. 

Lows Traditional Fish & Chip Shop – Aberdeenshire (Scotland) 

The shop 'Lows' is located in the Westhill shopping centre. We have won numerous awards for food quality and hygiene. It was established 30 years ago by Clifford Low who has spent his entire life in the fish industry. Lows Traditional Fish and Chips sponsors the table tennis academy at Aberdeen sports village and has donated £3000 in the last 2 years providing coaching 4 nights a week for 6-14 year olds

Owner, Colin Cromar, makes fishcakes, mushy peas, tartare sauce, potato fritters and macaroni cheese from scratch ensuring the best quality products are used. The venue in Thornton, Fife has definitely been the ‘plaice’ to be for some local schools by opening the doors to welcome primary school parties to find out what goes on behind the scenes of a busy Fish & Chip Shop. For many this was the first time they had been up close with whole fish and proved a real talking point for them

Shillingfords – West Glamorgan (Wales)

In 1989 when the Shillingford family packed up their Yorkshire lives and headed down to South Wales to open a brand new fish and chip shop. The cafe has gone from 'AI's Cafe' to 'No 1 Fish Bar' before becoming Shillingfords, turning a small fish bar into a modern eatery

The Crispy Cod – Rhondda Cynon Taf (Wales) 

The Crispy Cod was founded by Mathew Williams in 2008. It was created with the concept of providing the freshest and finest food in the Rhondda Valleys. It began as a humble fish & chip shop in Tonyrefail that was destined to make a difference. The shop soon found amazing success within the local community and became the pinnacle of takeaway food

Dolphin Takeaway – County Tyrone (Northern Ireland)

The shop has officially been Northern Ireland’s No.1 Fish & Chip Shop 2018 for the  past three years. Their extensive menu also includes a full-gluten free option served daily. The Dungannon shop was established in 1989 and is the longest serving and best loved family takeaway

Mister C’s first opened in 1981 on Barlby road before moving to our present location on Micklegate in 1986. It is a family-run business and still use the same batter recipe we used on the day we opened, 35 years ago. Fish & Chips existed in the eighteenth century and were referred to by Charles Dickens in 'Oliver Twist‘ – hence the name 'Olley's'. In this area small businesses sold fish & chips separately in the small shops of Britain's indus­trial town, Chips were a main staple food of the industrial North, whilst fried fish was really introduced in London's East End

For 18 years, Captain Cod has been the go-to fish and chip shop in Hoddesdon, with the queue of customers snaking out of the door (particularly on a Friday and Saturday evening) the stuff of local legend. It is still run by the same owners, Tony Forgione and his brothers Luigi and Libby, who opened it back in 1998

The families first Fish & Chip Shop was established 1963 and was named after their father, Ciriaco Forgione. Althought that proved to be a bit of a tongue twister for the locals and so they named him Sid because he resembled Sid James from the 'Carry On' films. Sid's (Ciriaco's) three Sons inherited his passion and success in the Fish & Chip Shop industry
